This premium itinerary is designed to explore a wide range of habitats and target species across the island’s remarkably diverse ecosystems. From lush lowland rainforests and the dry zones of Yala to two distinct locations in the highlands, each region offers its own unique atmosphere and endemic herpetofauna.

The Forest Viper Trifecta
Andes to Amazon | 4 - 13 April 2027 | 5-8 people
Embark on a 10-day herping expedition through three distinct elevations in one of the world’s premier herpetological hotspots: the Ecuadorian Amazon.
Alongside a wide range of Andean and Amazonian targets, this itinerary is carefully designed around one of the expedition’s main goals: encountering three spectacular and elusive arboreal vipers: Bothrops pulcher, Bothrops taeniatus, and Bothrops bilineatus.
Throughout the expedition, we’ll stay at carefully selected remote jungle lodges that put us right in the heart of prime habitat. From here, we’ll have easy access to extensive networks of rarely explored trails, allowing us to spend as much time as possible in the field and reach areas far beyond the usual tourist routes.
With an incredible diversity of snakes, frogs, lizards and other wildlife along the way, every night in the field has the potential to produce something completely unexpected.

Guided by experienced herpetologists and local experts, this immersive adventure combines night hikes, river explorations, and moments of true wilderness discovery. Each day offers something new, from hiking through pristine jungle in search of diurnal species to cooling off in forest ponds and exploring hidden caves surrounded by the sounds of the Amazon.

Mystical mountains to the lush lowlands

From searching for rare vipers in the misty cloud forests of the highlands to experiencing the staggering biodiversity and abundance of Costa Rica’s lush Caribbean rainforests, this expedition takes you through some of the country’s hidden gems in search of both elusive and iconic reptiles and amphibians.
Our nights will be dedicated to herping, exploring trails and habitats selected for their potential to produce some of Costa Rica’s most spectacular species. From highland specialists found only within a narrow elevational range to the incredible diversity of snakes, frogs and lizards of the Caribbean lowlands, there is always something new to search for.
Beyond herping, our days offer plenty of opportunities to experience Costa Rica itself. We’ll discover hidden waterfalls, learn about the culture and traditions of the Indigenous Bribri people, unwind in natural hot springs, and experience the laid-back atmosphere of the Caribbean coast, making this a well-rounded journey through one of the most biodiverse countries on Earth.

The Himalayan foothills of Northeast India

Join us for a pioneering 10-day expedition into the remote forests of Northeast India, a region renowned for its exceptional biodiversity yet still rarely explored by herping groups. Together with an Indian herpetologist, we’ll venture into the foothills of the Eastern Himalayas in search of some of Asia’s most extraordinary reptiles and amphibians.
What makes this expedition particularly exciting is how much remains to be discovered. Alongside iconic species, we’ll search for reptiles and amphibians that are rarely encountered, poorly understood, or only recently described by science. In a region where new species continue to be documented, even the more unusual encounters can be genuinely significant.
Between long days and nights in the field, we’ll experience the landscapes, villages and incredible food of Northeast India, making this an expedition into one of Asia’s most fascinating and least explored herpetological destinations.
