Suriname
Exploring South America’s best kept secret.
Hidden away in South America’s northeast, Suriname is one of the last truly wild frontiers of the Amazon, and one of its best-kept secrets.
What sets Suriname apart is the feeling of discovery. Few travelers venture this far, making every night hike and river crossing feel like true exploration. This expedition takes you deep into vast, untouched rainforest where the biodiversity is staggering and the human footprint is minimal. You’ll traverse blackwater rivers, explore dense jungle trails and search for some of South America’s most elusive herpetofauna.
Targets include the infamous South-American Bushmaster (Lachesis muta), the Emerald Tree Boa (Corallus caninus), the Green Anaconda (Eunectes murinus), the Two-lined Forest Pit Viper (Bothrops bilineatus), many species of coral snakes, colubrids and some incredible amphibian target such as the Giant Monkey Frog (Phyllomedusa bicolor), The Suriname Toad (Pipa pipa) and Hoogmoed’s Harlequin Frog (Atelopus hoogmoedi) and much more.
Through excellent guides with knowledge of the forest, its inhabitants and wildlife photography, this trip is a guaranteed unforgettable experience.
Itinerary
DAY 1-2: Pickup from Zanderij Airport, short drive to Palulu where we will be spending the first two nights in hammocks. Besides supporting a tremendous diversity of snakes, in this ancient forest, our main target will be the elusive South American Bushmaster.
By day we will be looking for some diurnals like Sipos, Vine snakes and Parrot snakes as well as enjoying a refreshing natural pool in the middle of the forest.
DAY 3-5: transfer to a forest cabin in Brownsberg (day 3). This magical place is a true hotspot for both Emerald Tree Boas and Two-lined Forest Pit Vipers.
By day we will explore a waterfall where we have the chance to encounter the extremely variable Hoogmoed’s Harlequin frog.
DAY 6-7: Transfer to Seliba (day 6). Next to being the ideal amazon hangout spot where we have plenty of time to swim and relax, the forest surrounding this place is full of wildlife. Rainbow Boas, Green Anacondas, Emerald Tree Boas, Sipos, Caiman, Coral snakes and Giant Monkey frogs can all be seen here.
DAY 8-9: Transfer to Sutopia (day 8). This resort just outside Paramaribo is the perfect place to spend the last night. With a pool and some hammocks overlooking the beautiful and impressive Suriname River, this is the perfect place to go through your photos and celebrate the trip.
Our last night here we have a chance to look for more common species like the Fer-de-Lance, Sipos, Coral snakes, Tree Boas and some other interesting lizards and amphibians that we might have missed on the rest of the trip.
